Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.Edgar Degas
Each of these images began as an original photo that captured a moment in a story that I loved; many of them would go on for pages. Next, I took them into the computer and created many different layers that each capture an aspect of the photo. Then, using digital watercolor brushes on my Wacom tablet, I painted the photo back together. Subtle digital penstrokes highlight and underscore structural elements and add texture.
Speaking of texture, photos of canvases and scans of watercolors were laid upon each composition to further add to the dimensionality of the piece.
I was able to automate some of the process, but many hours still went in to hand-painting each image. For those interested in purchasing a piece, the automation process never quite gives the same result, so every print is a true original.
At the end of the day, I cannot hope the viewer will see the same thing that I saw when I took the photo. Yet, my hope in this process is that you will be able to catch some of my experience as I perceived it and that it will open your eyes to see in a new way.
May you have eyes to see.
